Everyday operations like synchronizing with a desktop computer or beaming your business card can now be performed without even looking at the watch!
Built-in in and third party applications can be launched in a second by pre-defined or configurable simple button combinations.
But wait, there is more, A+ provides some essential functionality which many would have wished was built-in at first place, like persistent backlight (excellent for night reading) or such an essential tool as a stopwatch!
Finally, A+ is open and extendable. Other developers can create services that the watch users can install and use.
After the A+ files are installed, the device should request a soft reset.
This is normal and necessary to allow A+ to prepare itself for work.
After the soft reset the
watch will display either the system's preferences panel (default behavior) or
usually an application launcher (if you have installed one that makes it do so).
In either case, you can instantly verify if A+ was successfully installed by doing the following:
1. Press and hold down the Page Up key
2. Press and hold for a short while (a second or even less) the Page Down key,
while still holding down the Page Up key
3. Release both keys
If A+ is successfully installed, it should bring up the Stopwatch service enhancement!
You can now experiment with other key combinations, such as Page Up + Back, Page Down + Back, Rocker Up + Back and Rocker Down + Back.
Note you do not have to launch the A+ application interface to access those functions!
While A+ provides default configuration of buttons and applications upon
install, you may want to change it.
You will also need to register the product if you plan on using it.
Those and other services are accessible via the standard A+ application
interface accessible via the device's launcher, much like any other application.
The main window is organized like a watch itself and you can use the rocker to turn the arrow to the function you are interested in.
The two most common functions, however, would not require you to spend time clicking and rotating - the button combination editor and the Quick Launch list editor are mapped to the Page Up and Page Down buttons for direct access.
The button configuration editor allows you to choose the applications or services to be launched when a particular button combination is pressed.
The Quick Launch editor allows you to select the applications and services accessible via the Quick Launch service.
This chapter of the user manual lists the application services in A+.
Service | A+ version | Description |
Stopwatch | 1.2 | Implements a simple stopwatch application with the ability to start, stop and reset the counter; precision to hundreds of a second. |
Backlight | 1.2 | Allows the backlight to be turned permanently on, which indeed eats a lot of the battery power, but is still preferred by many for night reading or flashlight. |
Quick Launch | 1.2 | An extension of the A+ hotkey combinations, which pops up a list with pre-defined applications in large, easily readable and clickable form and in predefined order. This is very useful for quick application launching, with or without looking at the watch, because since the order of the applications is know, one can automatically press the navigation buttons to actually select and run the desired app without looking at the display while doing it. |
Business Card | 1.2 | Directly beams the pre-selected business card from the Address Book. If no card is selected, does nothing. |
Hotsync Now | 1.2 | Initiates a Hotsync process, which is equivalent to launching the Hotsync application and hitting the icon in it. |
Beam A+ | 1.2 | A simple service allowing you to beam a compact, unregistered installation of A+ to other people. |
Service List | 1.2 | Similar to Quick Launch, but only for the defined A+ services. |
Grayscale | 1.2 | Allows switching the default device display mode between monochrome (B/W) and 16-level grayscale. No difference will be seen in applications that manually set the display mode when they operate. |
To remove A+ from your watch you need to perform the following simple steps:
1. Go to the main Application Launcher
2. Tap the clock at the top left corner of the display to show the menu.
3. From the menu, select "Delete".
4. In the list that appears, make sure to select and delete every title that starts with "APlus"; there are four such apps as of version 1.2 of A+.
5. Once done, you will want to reset the watch by putting a pin or its own stylus in the reset button, located in a small opening in the middle at the left side of the watch. Refer to your user manual for the exact location.
We kindly ask that you contact us to
let us know the reason for uninstalling
the application.
We assure you we will do our best to resolve any potential problems you may have
found!
Q. The buttons do not seem to work in Watch Mode.
What gives?
A. The watch's hardware design makes it impossible to make A+ work in the
Watch mode. And for a good reason. Fossil has optimized the device a lot to save
battery life. In the so-called "watch mode" the computer inside your watch is
actually fully asleep and therefore inactive. A separate circuit is only keeping
the display image alive without even knowing what's in there; it wakes up the
computer every 1 minute to request update of the display, then puts it back to
sleep.
Q. I press and press the buttons, but it does not
work. What am I doing wrong?
A. Try another soft reset and see if the problem continues; if so, please
email us at support@beiks.com.
Q. I do not see A+ in the list of hacks in my hack
manager. Is that normal?
A. Yes it is. Just like hacks, A+ is an operating system extension, but for
efficiency reasons and prolonged battery life it is not compatible with any of
the popular hacks. This allows it to be times more efficient in every aspect of
its functions.
