This release of UWIN supports new functionality and new libraries and utilities. It has an improved performance, and provides better interoperability with other filesystems such as Samba. Features of UWIN also include pipes, hard file links, UNIX networking, and UNIX graphical support through the X Window System. It also provides UNIX and POSIX.2 utilities such as Ksh, awk, and vi. The UWIN environment is a User-mode rutime library, which works over the Win32 sub-system. Shell scripts and other scripted applications that use UNIX and POSIX.2 utilities will run under UWIN. Support is also provided for work on a Windows NT system remotely through a Telnet Session.
UWIN does not essentially require a NTFS partition. You can install UWIN on a FAT partition as well. However, you will not get full POSIX features (e.g., file links, security) on a FAT system though. Case sensitive file names and file links are only available on NTFS partitions.

a Unix environment on Windows NT/9x platforms. It is a comprehensive set
of Unix command shells and utilities. This toolkit also includes over 300
Unix shell tools and utilities. Also included in this toolkit are many

for each of the utilities.

UWIN - SDK
Wipro UWIN UWIN SDK adds application
development support on UWIN. UWIN SDK includes system header files and
libraries that are required for general purpose Unix application development
on Windows. More than 300 Unix header files are provided with this SDK
and they have been revised to enable the use of either Visual C++ or GNU
C compilers. UWIN SDK has over 60 commonly used Unix shared libraries.
UWIN SDK also provides a cc compiler, which is a wrapper over the native
Windows compiler, like Visual C++ or Borland C/C++ compilers. Documentation
in Unix nroff format is provided for each of the Unix APIs and development
tools.

UWIN - Runtime
Wipro UWIN Runtime is a set of libraries
providing Unix API support on Windows. It is required for executing UWIN
applications on Windows systems that do not have UWIN Base Toolkit installed.
Users who have developed applications on UWIN or migrated existing Unix
applications to Windows using UWIN would require the UWIN Runtime to deploy
these applications on Windows systems, without the need for installing
the complete UWIN software. Wipro provides a customized version of UWIN
Runtime that caters to individual requirements of customers.
