Null Pointer Exception
|
The display area is just a gray box with no animation for a long time. When you move the
cursor onto the gray area, you see the message on the status line (screen lower
left):
Applet CoolSlides exception:Java.lang.Null
Pointer.Exception
Why does this happen?
The problem may occur when you are running CoolSlides both from your local
drive and from a web site. Sometimes there is a conflict between the cached
files and the file locations.
How to Fix It
- Restart your computer to refresh the memory.
- Start your browser without any CoolSlides file.
- Delete your browser's cached files:
For Internet Explorer, click View -> Internet Options -> Delete Files.
For Netscape, click Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache ->
Clear Memory Cache and Clear Disk Cache.
- Run CoolSlides from your web site or your local drive only.

Applet CoolSlides can't start
|
The display area is just a gray box with no animation for a long time. When you move the
cursor onto the gray area, you see the message on the status line (screen lower
left):
Applet CoolSlides can't start:class CoolSlides not found
Why does this happen?
The file CoolSlides.class has a wrong name or a wrong format.
How to Fix It
- Make sure that the CoolSlides.class file is in the same directory as the HTML
file using it.
- If you used a DOS unzip that chopped the name to CoolSl~1.cla, you can change
it back to CoolSlides.class. Better yet, download Winzip to unzip the files again.
- When you upload the CoolSlides.class to your web site, make sure you uploaded
it as a binary file.

See Null Pointer exception, for
the same cause and fixes.
How to Fix It
You may have this problem using a 256 color GIF image. Try
converting the image to a full-colored JPG format, see the
User's Guide for image tools.

Netscape Problems
|
CoolSlides has some problems with Netscape:
Netscape 4.0 prevents all Java applets from accessing local drives. It gives
a bypass though. Unfortunately, neither the prevention or the bypass works properly.
CoolSlides sometimes can not start with Netscape from your local computer.
How to Fix It:
- Netscape 4.5 that is now available for download has fixed these problems.
Download Netscape 4.5 PR to run CoolSlides.
- If you have Netscape 3.xx or Microsoft Internet Explorer, use that browser to run CoolSlides locally.
- Read the
Netscape security settings to understand the options and the risks, and use the
PrefWrangler to change your Netscape security settings to allow CoolSlides to access local files.
