calinagwghsai kai olon to swma (YLT) for we all make many
stumbles; if any one in word doth not stumble, this one is a perfect
man, able to bridle also the whole body; (KJV) For in many
things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man,
and able also to bridle the whole body. (ASV) For in many

autwn metagomen (YLT) lo, the bits we put into the mouths of
the horses for their obeying us, and their whole body we turn about;
(KJV) Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey
us; and we turn about their whole body. (ASV) Now if we put
the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about
their whole body also. |

upo sklhrwn anemwn elaunomena metagetai upo elacistou phdaliou opou an h ormh
tou euyunontov boulhtai (YLT) lo, also the ships, being so
great, and by fierce winds being driven, are led about by a very small helm,
whithersoever the impulse of the helmsman doth counsel, (KJV)
Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce
winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the
governor listeth. (ASV) Behold, the ships also, though they
are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very
small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. |

outwv kai h glwssa mikron melov estin kai megalaucei idou oligon pur hlikhn
ulhn anaptei (YLT) so also the tongue is a little member, and
doth boast greatly; lo, a little fire how much wood it doth kindle!
(KJV) Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great
things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! (ASV)
So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things.

h spilousa olon to swma kai flogizousa ton trocon thv genesewv kai flogizomenh
upo thv geennhv (YLT) and the tongue is a fire, the
world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is
spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is
set on fire by the gehenna. (KJV) And the tongue is a fire, a
world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the
whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of
hell. (ASV) And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity
among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on
fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. |

gar fusiv yhriwn te kai peteinwn erpetwn te kai enaliwn damazetai kai
dedamastai th fusei th anyrwpinh (YLT) For every nature, both
of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is
subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature, (KJV)
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the
sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: (ASV) For every
kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed,
and hath been tamed by mankind. |

anyrwpwn damasai akatasceton kakon mesth iou yanathforou (YLT)
and the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, it is an unruly evil,
full of deadly poison, (KJV) But the tongue can no man tame;
it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. (ASV) But the
tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of
deadly poison. |

auth katarwmeya touv anyrwpouv touv kay omoiwsin yeou gegonotav (YLT)
with it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men
made according to the similitude of God; (KJV) Therewith
bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after
the similitude of God. (ASV) Therewith bless we the Lord and
Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:

adelfoi mou tauta outwv ginesyai (YLT) out of the same mouth
doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these
things so to happen; (KJV) Out of the same mouth proceedeth
blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
(ASV) out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My
brethren, these things ought not so to be. |

fountain out of the same opening pour forth the sweet and the bitter?
(KJV) Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and
bitter? (ASV) Doth the fountain send forth from the same
opening sweet water and bitter? |
12 | (GRK) mh dunatai
adelfoi mou sukh elaiav poihsai h ampelov suka outwv oudemia phgh alukon kai
gluku poihsai udwr (YLT) is a fig-tree able, my brethren,
olives to make? or a vine figs? so no fountain salt and sweet water is
able to make. (KJV) Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear
olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water
and fresh. (ASV) Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or
a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet. |

tiv sofov kai episthmwn en umin deixatw ek thv kalhv anastrofhv ta erga autou
en prauthti sofiav (YLT) Who is wise and intelligent
among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of
wisdom, (KJV) Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge
among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of
wisdom. (ASV) Who is wise and understanding among you? let him
show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. |

zhlon pikron ecete kai eriyeian en th kardia umwn mh katakaucasye kai qeudesye
kata thv alhyeiav (YLT) and if bitter zeal ye have, and
rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth; (KJV)
But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and
lie not against the truth. (ASV) But if ye have bitter
jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

daimoniwdhv (YLT) this wisdom is not descending from above,
but earthly, physical, demon-like, (KJV) This wisdom
descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. (ASV)
This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is
earthly, sensual, devilish. |
16 | (GRK) opou gar zhlov kai eriyeia
ekei akatastasia kai pan faulon pragma (YLT) for where zeal
and rivalry are, there is insurrection and every evil matter;
(KJV) For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every
evil work. (ASV) For where jealousy and faction are, there is
confusion and every vile deed. |
17 | (GRK) h de anwyen sofia prwton
men agnh estin epeita eirhnikh epieikhv eupeiyhv mesth eleouv kai karpwn agaywn
adiakritov kai anupokritov (YLT) and the wisdom from above,
first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of
kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: -- (KJV)
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without
partiality, and without hypocrisy. (ASV) But the wisdom that
is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full
of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.

karpov de thv dikaiosunhv en eirhnh speiretai toiv poiousin eirhnhn
(YLT) and the fruit of the righteousness in peace is sown to
those making peace. (KJV) And the fruit of righteousness is
