Subject: Syvert Nørsett


With great sadness we report that Syvert Paul Norsett, Professor
Emeritus at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, passed
away on April 29, 2024, at the age of 79 after a short period of
illness. Norsett was a pioneer in the field of numerical methods for
ordinary differential equations, where he made a wide range of
important contributions over his career. He also did important work in
approximation theory and integral equations. Norsett played an
important role in the Norwegian mathematical community. He was a
mentor and door opener to the international research community for
many young Norwegian researchers, and was known for his warm and
generous personality and for spreading joy and enthusiasm among his
friends and colleagues. Our thoughts go to his wife, Edith, his 4
children and 6 grandchildren.

I am trying to get in contact with my former PhD supervisor, Dr
Richard Wait. I was a graduate student in the Computation and
Statistical Science (C&SS) Department at Liverpool from 1972-1974 and
was awarded my degree in 1977. I know Dick left Liverpool and worked
at Upsalla University around 2008 but I have been unable to find any
more recent information regarding his whereabouts.

Has anyone got any current contact details or news of his location
since he left Upsalla that they could share with me?

Subject: Call for Nominations, ACM TOMS EiC


The term of the current Editors-in-Chief (EiCs) of the ACM
Transactions on Mathematical Software (TOMS,
https://dl.acm.org/journal/toms) is coming to an end, and the ACM
Publications Board has set up a nominating committee to assist the
Board in selecting new EiC leadership. TOMS documents the theoretical
underpinnings of numeric, symbolic, algebraic, and geometric computing
applications. It focuses on analysis and construction of algorithms
and programs, and the interaction of programs and
architecture. Algorithms documented in TOMS are available as the
Collected Algorithms of the ACM at calgo.acm.org. TOMS was established
in 1975; it was the first ACM journal to develop a separate reviewing
process to enhance the reproducibility of presented research and reuse
generated artifacts.

Nominations, including self-nominations, are invited for a three-year
term as TOMS EiC, beginning on September 1, 2024. The previous EiC
role was handle by two co-EiCs in a partnership. We welcome
nominations, including joint self-nominations, for co-EiCs. The EiC
appointment may be renewed at most one time. This is a voluntary
position, but ACM will provide appropriate administrative support.

The deadline for submitting nominations is June 17, 2024, although
nominations will continue to be accepted until the position is
filled. Please send all nominations to the search committee chair,
Michael Heroux (maherou@sandia.gov).

Version 4.7 of MFEM, a lightweight, general, scalable C++ library for
finite element methods, is now available at: https://mfem.org.

The goal of MFEM is to enable high-performance scalable finite element
discretization research and application development on a wide variety
of platforms, ranging from laptops to exascale supercomputers.

Some of the new additions in version 4.7 are:
- Named mesh attribute sets.
- General refinement of NURBS meshes.
- Capability to partition big serial meshes.
- Support for single and double precision builds.
- New integrator for hyperbolic conservation laws.
- Capability to construct cut-FEM integration rules.
- Partial assembly and GPU support for DG diffusion.
- GPU-accelerated LOR assembly on surface meshes.
- Automatically sync runtime compute policy with hypre.
- Mortar contact miniapp based on the Tribal library.
- LOR block GPU solver for linear elasticity.
- Bramble-Pasciak preconditioner for the Darcy problem.
- Updated Doxygen documentation style.

The MFEM library has many more features, including:
- 2D and 3D, arbitrary order H1, H(curl), H(div), L2, NURBS elements.
- State-of-the-art MPI scalability and GPU acceleration.
- Conforming/nonconforming adaptive mesh refinement (AMR), including
anisotropic refinement, derefinement and parallel load balancing.
- Galerkin, mixed, isogeometric, discontinuous Galerkin, hybridized,
and DPG discretizations.
- Support for triangular, quadrilateral, tetrahedral and hexahedral
elements, including arbitrary order curvilinear meshes.
- Scalable algebraic multigrid, time integrators, and eigensolvers.
- Interactive OpenGL visualization with the MFEM-based GLVis tool.

MFEM is being developed in CASC, LLNL and is freely available under a

Subject: New Book, Complex Heterogeneous Systems


Complex Heterogeneous Systems by Markus Schmuck

The author's research on energy storage systems generally was
confronted with five characteristics, i.e., complex, interacting,
transporting, reacting, and heterogeneous systems. Hence, we refer to
these kind of systems as Complex Heterogeneous Systems (CHeSs).

The work considers interacting systems that exchange energy, mass,
information, etc. in various ways. The elementary building blocks of
CHeSs are based on fundamental thermodynamic, chemical, material,
physical, and mathematical principles such as variational and graph-
theoretic concepts. It investigates ways of defining complexity,
computing percolation thresholds, making smart decisions also by
learning from data/past experiences (e.g., providing a systematic
approach towards battery management systems), and identifying battery
life (e.g., by blow-up analysis of highly nonlinear concentrated
solutions).

Ultimately, the elaborated tools shall allow the reader to obtain a
general understanding for simulating (also on quantum computers),
controlling, and developing CHeSs as well as to pave the way for a
general theory on CHeSs generalizing the view on complexity,
measurement, estimation, and control.

- Bridges gaps between rigorous mathematical and applied sciences.
- Elaborates methods to understand, control, and develop new CHeSs.
- Establishes the multiscale frameworks' importance beyond quantum
computing.

Subject: Machine Learning in Infinite Dimensions, UK, Aug 2024


We would like to draw your attention to a workshop on Machine Learning
in Infinite Dimensions to be held at the University of Bath from the
5th to the 9th of August 2024. Lifting high-dimensional problems to an
infinite-dimensional space and designing algorithms in that setting
has been a fruitful idea in many areas of applied mathematics,
including inverse problems, optimisation, and partial differential
equations. This approach is sometimes referred to as
"optimise-then-discretise" and allows the development of algorithms
that are inherently dimension- and discretisation-independent and can
perform better in high-dimensions. In the context of machine learning,
this paradigm can be rephrased as "learn-then-discretise".

This workshop aims to bring together researchers who work on different
aspects of infinite-dimensionality in machine learning. Topics
include, but are not restricted to, Gaussian process regression,
operator learning, function spaces of neural networks, and measure
transport. Attendance is free but we ask all attendees to apply
before 5th June. Support for travel and/or accommodation is available
for (a limited number of) PhD students and early career researchers -
please apply before 5th June.

We acknowledge generous support of the International Centre for
Mathematical Sciences, Edinburgh and the London Mathematical Society,

The 11th deal.II Users' and Developers' workshop will be held August
12-16, 2024 in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. The intent of this
workshop is to discuss applications and tools using deal.II, as well
as future directions for the library itself. deal.II is a widely used
open source library supporting finite element computations,

If you are a user of deal.II, you are invited to participate! In
addition (though this is not a requirement for participation), we
invite proposals for talks and discussion topics by users and existing
developers in the following areas:
- Use cases and applications of the library.
- What users think would be useful directions for the library to go
into, things that are missing, and possibly getting people together
who can help implement those parts.
- Newer parts of the library (e.g., geometry descriptions, large
parallel computations, etc.) and how these could help in your
programs.
A significant part of the time will be set aside for "hackathon"- or
"code jam"-style sessions where people can ask questions, work on
their codes with others, and receive help from experienced users.

This school is targeted at anyone interested to apply model order
reduction in their work using pyMOR (https://pymor.org). It will offer
interactive lectures on some of the most important MOR methods and how
to use these methods with pyMOR. In hands-on sessions, participants
will have the opportunity to either gain more experience with pyMOR
through exercise problems or to work on integrating pyMOR into their
existing projects with the help of the pyMOR developers.

Experienced users of pyMOR and related software packages are
especially invited to join us for the integrated user meeting from
Thursday morning to Friday noon. A code sprint will take place on
Thursday evening.

domain expertise. This 5-day conference will bring together
computational scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and domain
experts from industry, the national laboratories, and academia.

anticipate funding from the US National Science Foundation to support
registration and accommodation for US-based Early Career Researchers
(Student or having obtained a PhD after September 09, 2021). The

computational predictions of droplet wetting-like processes in cells.

The project will develop numerical simulations of the viscous
interfacial fluid flow at cellular membranes. More specifically, it
will address the basic mechanochemical processes that regulate one of
the most fundamental communication pathways in cell biology - the
'self-eating' process of autophagy. Autophagy protects us from
infections, cancer and neurodegerative diseases and has been shown to
promote longevity in model organisms. The PhD work will involve
theoretical and computational modelling, in collaboration with
experimentalists. It is planned that the numerical simulations will
help advance our understanding of these membrane wetting dynamics. The
PhD research fellowship will be part of my group

We are currently seeking to recruit a highly motivated Doctoral
Researchers (m/f/d; 75% E13) at Paderborn University in the group for
Numerics of Partial Differential Equations of Prof. Dr. Balazs Kovacs.
The position will focus on numerical analysis for elasticity problems,
within the DFG funded Research Unit 3013 'Vector- and Tensor-Valued
Surface PDEs'.

The salary is based on the wage agreement of the civil service in TV-L
