To subscribe to a News Group, select the Subscribe Tab. Once here, you will notice two lists, granted they will be blank, but there are two lists just the same. The top one is where the full list of newsgroups will reside, the second will display the ones you have sunscribed to.
If this is the first time you have used mNews, then you won't have the list of news groups stored on disk (the Load button will be ghosted). To get the list, you must be connected. Press the Download button and mNews will start retreiving the list. Depending on your connection speed, this may take a long time. By default the status window showing the socket connections will be displayed. If it is not, press Alt-s to display it. One of the connections will be displaying how many lines have been read (one group per line, 15,000+ groups). Once the list has been downloaded, it will be saved to disk, sorted, and then displayed. Displaying the list can be time consuming, so please be patient, especially if your machine is slow. There is a status indicator to let you know the progress. When it is finished, you can navigate through the heirarchies to find the groups you want. Double-click on the group to subscribe or press the Subscribe button. The selected group will appear in the lower list. NOTE: the full list takes a lot of memory (something I hope to remedy), so when you have finished subscribing, press the Clear button to free up this memory. You will notice a Search function. This may or may not work. Type in the word you want to look for (ie be.games) and press the Search button. This probably won't work. One of the many bugs that need to be worked out. When you have subscribed to the groups, press theSave button next to the lower list. If you quit mNews before doing this, well, you will have to subscribe again. Pressing the Save As button will allow you to save the list under a different name than default. Load will bring up a file requestor for you to select a list of groups. To un-subscribe, select a group and press Delete. Another way to subscribe is by manually entering the group name. Press the New button to clear the text, and enter in the news group, pressing Enter. Please keep in mind that you need to know the exact name of the group to do this. |

You do not have to be connected to the internet to subscribe once you have downloaded the full list. To use the rest of mNews however, you will need to be connected.
